Wow Factor: have I created new meaning? Asked new questions?

From my research, it is obvious that the importance of John Hughes work has been questioned before so my question is not completely original.  Although I feel like my work has some originality due to the fact that all this information hasn’t been organized in the same place in a research paper.  I found many sources but none of them alone gave me everything I need, all of them together did but I compiled all that information to make something new.

Reflection: in the end what did I do well, what did I learn, what would I do differently next time.

I feel like I organized my information well, I did struggle with that but I think it turned out good. I learned so much more than I once new about my favorite movies.  I learned that these movies I’ve watched so many times have other meanings than I interpreted and have had so many impacts.  As I didn’t grow up in the 80s I didn’t understand how important they were then, I just knew that people still watch them now, but they really have such a huge sociological effect which is really interesting. I’ve learned that the man who made all these movies is really such a creative genius, and so much more thought went it to these movies than you see just from watching them. There is so much depth to these movies. I found my topic very interesting but If I was to do this again I would pick a different topic just because this could easily fall into an opinion piece instead of a research project, so I had to be careful not to do that.

Introduction:
In my introduction will introduce my topic and my stance(John Hughes' Coming of Age films remain relevant, have a lasting impact and are important to teens) and what my four main points which will make up the body of my essay and explain why John Hughes' films are important.  There will be a hook as well as a thesis which will introduce my topic and subtopics.

Body Paragraph #1
John Hughes' movies address teens and their problems seriously
-the problems depicted in the movie: mental health, fitting in, bullying, class seperation, etc.
-how they were addressed; examples from the films
-how this broke barriers; first to talk about these problems

They accurately portray teens; the characters are real and dynamic rather than stock.

-the depth to the characters

The movies have changed the way Hollywood makes teen movies

Conclusion:
Tie everything up. Go over my topic and main points again and summarize essay and conclude.

*all of my evidence is from online sources which will be in my bibliography and will be cited within my essay
*I haven't decided how I will incorporate visuals yet but visuals are important to my project

Reflection: am I ready to proceed? Do I need anymore research?

Today I went through my research and found any hole in my research that needed to be filled.  I found sources through the online database that would complete my research.  I have a little bit more note-taking to do and then I will be ready to proceed on to my project outline.

Reflection: Background knowledge: what have i learned, how is my new knowledge informing my project decisions?

I have been researching about John Hughes’ Coming of Age films and I found a few sources that gave me what I was looking for. So far I have researched and taken notes on the films relevance, sociological impact, major themes, important lessons, process of how they were made, the teen movie market, adolescent problems important to the films, and music central to the movies. I have about 9 sources I looked at that I am keeping track of and 4 of those are the ones I really focused on for the bulk of my info. As I research and take notes it becomes clearer how I will structure my project and I have ideas of what it will look like. I still have to research the coming of age novels I choose, which are the perks of being a wallflower and catcher in the rye.  After I research all of that I will go back and make sure I haven’t missed anything and I have enough evidence.

I plan to finish my project outline by June 9th or June 10th latest since that is the due date

Reflection: my choice for study and why.

For my study I chose the topic of coming of age films in particular John Hughes films.  My aim is to discover why these coming of age films were/are popular and relatable from the 80’s till the present.  As well as the impact they’ve had; on other films, on individuals, on different generations of adolescents. I came to this idea while brainstorming I thought of all the things I really enjoy; books, films, shows, music, etc., and I thought of coming of age films and books.  Some of my favorite books are categorized as coming of age books, such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Then I tried to think of what I could do with those books but nothing really worked, question wise. So then I thought what about coming of age films.  Which brought to mind John Hughes, whose films “The Breakfast Club”, “Sixteen Candles”, and “Pretty and Pink” are some of my favorite movies, and I had seen a documentary about writer and director a while back talking about how his work was so powerful for adolescents. So I was inspired to know why these types of films continued to work for over three generations.  Other than their humor and obvious story line appeal, I wanted to go deeper into how they stayed relevant and why they’re so important. I’ve been brainstorming questions around my bigger main question which I will proceed to answer through further inquiry.

To me inquiry means research, discovering, and exploring ideas.  It is a process of learning new subject matter or going further into subject matter you are already familiar with. It is the process of investigation to answer questions you have relating to the subject. Then creating something out of what you’ve learnt, a project, presentation, essay or research paper.  Through inquiry you can develop a deep understanding of your chosen subject.

Main Points:  Sea otters were near extinction but now prospering in BC.  Fishermen aren’t too happy about this because of pressure on west-coast marine life.
Summarize:  Sea otters were hunted almost near-extinction, however, they were reintroduced to BC and are now flourishing.  Fishermen are not too happy with the high-population sea otters, they worry that the sea otters appetite is responsible for the declining rate of salmon and other sea life.

Blog Post #13- Libraries in the News

1. Are Libraries a Thing of the Past?

1)When did you last use the PUBLIC library?
Fairly recently actually, I put a hold on a book a few weeks ago, and I picked it up a few days ago from the surrey public library.

2)Describe in point form, McTernan’s four arguments for closing public libraries.
McTernan argues that libraries are a thing of the past, he says “It’s an honourable tradition – but it’s over.”  He believes that one of the most important public library services is references but he says that now the internet is a far more superior; it gives the opportunity to be extremely informed very fast. He says that “We live in an information-rich society – so we should celebrate its availability, not yearn for a time when you had to go to the central library for it.”  He believes that the technology available in the library is too old and slow.  In addition he breaks the argument that “your local library is the gateway to a national and international network of literature and education,” by saying but so is your computer and it is far better since you have vast access.  He also negates the argument of that a library provides a meeting place by arguing that every child has a desk and computer at home and secondary school libraries are available otherwise.  Overall he believes libraries are a thing of the past and are no longer needed.

1)What are some of the reasons Wong gives to prove that libraries are relevant today?

She shows that libraries are still relevant by showing the statistics of the number of people who still have library cards and use the library currently; and how the number of visits and users increased. She argues that although we have the internet, some people are not technologically advanced or have the means to access technology. She also points out that many libraries are updated and advanced.  In addition, Wong says that libraries provide us with so much from English learning assistance to job-search assistance. The following statement by Wong summarizes her main point that “libraries are one of society’s great equalizers.”
2)  What are some of the services provided to the public through libraries? 
Public libraries provide a variety of useful services.  For example, there are traditional reading and story time options for children which support literacy and communication skills. As well libraries offer help with schoolwork, language skills and career counselling and much more.  Essentially, there is something for everyone.
3) What do you think she means when she says “libraries are one of society’s great equalizers”
When Wong says the aforementioned quote she means that libraries provide a safe, inclusive, adaptable community in which there are opportunities for everyone. They are available to almost everyone.

Assignment:

I completely agree with Wong’s points, I think public libraries are essential to a community. I love reading and public libraries are a valuable asset to me for all sorts of things from studying to checking out books. I completely agree when Wong says libraries are one of society’s great equalizers,” she is saying that libraries are essential and provide a sense of community and offer so much variety which can appeal to all kinds of people. Libraries provide knowledge and literature to those who don’t have updated technology or can’t afford to purchase new books. As well they provide a space to study or meet with other people like a tutor or your peers.  It is a very neutral meeting place that doesn’t impose any pressure. As Wong says “Libraries are safe, comfortable communal spaces for people to come together to conduct business, learn, socialize, play and relax.” I completely agree with this statement. I personally feel that I have greatly benefitted from public libraries.  I took some classes there when I was little and now I use them to meet people to study or find books. Libraries are vital and “strive to remain relevant and accessible to everyone in their communities. Whoever you are, whatever your need, you get individualized, responsive service without judgment when you enter a public library.”

1) Have you been to the Surrey Central Library?
I have not been to the Surrey Central Library.
2) Describe the ways in which the new Surrey Public Library is similar to Fraser Height’s library? How are the two libraries different?
It has comfortable seating areas and study areas.  As well it could also be categorized as a “third place,” our school library is definitely a gathering place.
3) What does the author suggest about the relationship between the physical space and the way that libraries are thought of by the public?
They are reducing the book space and making the library a learning space and a place for people to hang out.  Libraries are changing to a more relaxing social space.

Some pros mentioned in this article are that technology for learning increases engagement and that it can provide an alternative way of learning.  Some cons that are metntioned are that technology use in schools can be distracting and discorage learnign rather than stimulating it.

3)What is North Vancouver’s Waldorf School doing differently from other schools in the lower mainland?
Waldorf school is deciding to refrain from letting kids use technology until they are in high school.  They believe in hands on instruction and using creative forms of learning.
4) Write a paragraph (minimum of 12 sentences) opinion piece explaining your viewpoint.  Should Fraser Heights follow the Waldorf school model

The Waldorf School believes in refraining from technology until students are at a high school level.  I understand why they want to do this and in some ways I think this is a good idea, however I don't think this should be implemented at our school.  I like the idea of not having the distraction of technology at school.  Personally I wish I had grown up around less technology, I feel as though if I did then I would have a greater attention span and more focus.  As well without the distraction of technology would’ve spent more time doing things that would be positive (being outdoors, reading more) instead of having screen time.  I don’t think that screen time is healthy for our brains at all but it is necessary as most homework and studying requires a laptop now and almost all the resources I use are found online. It is just far more easy to google than to look for books in a library and that is just a fact.  Ideally if I could’ve been born in an earlier generation without so many distractions I would’ve gladly taken that option, but that is just not reality and technology just becomes more predominant in our society each day.  Technology is a vital part of our world, I couldn’t even imagine going without it, which is why i cannot support the Waldorf school method because realistically i think technology is necessary. In addition, it is almost compulsory to be technology literate to be able to work in most jobs.  Almost everything is becoming accessible through the internet. And I’m aware that technology will just continue to advance and I think on top of it since it is so prevalent today.

The article cited above covers the transition most libraries are taking to move from paper books to ebooks, and the difficulty of purchasing ebooks for libraries.  One library in particular, which is interviewed in the article, the Cobourg Public Library has had 1,935 e-book checkouts in March alone. Unfortunately the major publishers have not made purchasing ebooks easy on the libraries budget. In addition, when libraries purchase an ebook they only have license to that one copy which means only one can be checked out at a time, which has resulted in a high waiting list for ebooks.  On top of this, sometimes there is an expiration date after a certain number of checkouts which means the library needs to re-purchase it.  Therefore an ebook can cost five times as much as the consumer price. Cobourg’s library CEO said “the fight for fair e-book pricing isn’t meant to take away profit from any party, but allow more accessibility to books from libraries without gouging their budgets.” However, one of the major publishers, Penguin Random House has lowered its ebook prices. The fight for fair ebook prices for libraries continues.

This article relates to libraries and education.  It discusses the challenge to bringing ebooks into libraries, which most libraries across the country are faced with. Ebooks will affect library operation as technology updates. Libraries are faced with the option to modernize and buy ebooks, but there are several difficulties to that as said in the article summary above. The decision of whether or not to buy ebooks depends on the demographic.  Most libraries do offer ebooks. It will affect people who use libraries, as some have preferences to ebooks. Many swear by ebooks and will be impatient with waiting and others like myself prefer physical copies that they can hold. Personally, I love physical copies of books, I couldn’t imagine converting to ebooks so the demand for ebooks wouldn't affect me.   As well many educational/school libraries have the option of ebooks and even e-textbooks so that will have an impact on education.  In conclusion, this article relates to libraries and education due to the fact that the struggle of purchasing of ebooks will affect both public libraries and school libraries.

Blog Post #12- Current Events

Current Event:
The article I chose is titled “N Carolina sues US Justice Department over LGBT law.” This article discusses the effects of the anti-human rights law passed in North Carolina.  The law requires people to use the public toilets that correspond with their sex on their birth certificate rather than the gender they identify themselves with.  The US justice department has said that this law “violates federal civil rights protections,” and the department has tried to prevent the state from upholding this discriminatory law.  This resulted in North Carolina suing the US justice department.  North Carolina is suing with the goal of having the discriminatory law upheld, saying that the law is “common sense privacy policy" and accuses the federal government of overstepping and supporters of the law say policies that allow transgender people to use toilets according to their gender identity increases the threat of sexual assault.”   LGBT rights activists have said that this law just adds stigma upon the transgender community by spreading untruthful claims to do with sexual assault.  They have said that “the law will deny the LGBT community basic protections.”  Due to the unjust law many major groups are boycotting North Carolina, such as businesses including PayPal and Bank of America.  As well as musicians Demi Lovato, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Cirque de Soleil, Ringo Starr who have cancelled shows to show their support for LGBT rights. The department of justice has taken another approach to denounce this law, Governor Pat McCrory has said that “The Obama administration is bypassing Congress by attempting to rewrite the law and set restroom policies for public and private employers across the country, not just North Carolina."  

Personal Reflection:

I choose this article because it deals with a very important subject and the issue of the anti-trans law being passed has had tremendous effects. This law is a step back in the quest for equality. Not only is it discriminatory to the LGBT community, it is anti-human rights, it is completely unfair and it is positive that at least the fact that it is unjust is being acknowledged and action has been taken. This topic effects the LGBT group as well as anyone who supports the fight for equality.

New Discovery/New Study:

The following article is on a scientist created second skin used to hid wrinkles and even treat skin ailments.  I found this article on BBC world news and it is titled “Scientist make ‘second skin’ to hide wrinkles.”  This new discovery was created by a team at Harvard Medical School and MIT.  Nature minerals reports that is once applied the formula dries and "mimics the properties of youthful skin.” Currently the possibility of using the product for commercial cosmetic use is being explored, but scientists are also exploring using it as a way of delivering medicines and as sun protection.

Personal Reflection:
I think this product can affect the health and cosmetic markets.  I think many people would love this product as youth is one of the most desired traits in beauty.  There are already so many products being purchases with promises of getting rid of wrinkles and looking younger, so I think this would have a great impact on consumers.

Blog Post 11- Library Careers

To become a public librarian and a school librarian a certain level of education is required.  School librarians must first have a bachelor's degree, which is the minimum education requirement. They must also have BC College of Teachers’ certificate. Generally, they will also require a Master’s Degree in Library Science or have completed a Teacher-Librarian Diploma or post-baccalaureate professional studies in school librarianship. 

A public librarian will require an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in Library and Information Science. Specialization may be required for some positions.  There are a variety of opportunities in Western Canada that will offer programs to earn the degrees one would need in order to work as a librarian. UBC, Langara, UVic, and University of Fraser Valley are some examples. 

Langara offers Library and Information technology program; this program is for becoming a public librarian.  It is a 2-year program if taken full-time and includes four terms. The program is spent learning library related business techniques and prepares students for a library related career. There is a regular in class option as well as an online option. Tuition is around 1,377 dollars, of course there is added expenses for program materials and such.  The program offers courses in subjects such as library history to subject analysis and classification. Graduates of this program have a variety of job opportunities, “almost 82% of the graduates in the program are currently employed in a wide range of libraries and information services.”(the official Langara College employment outcomes indicator of 2010).  

An example of a program for someone wanting to become a school librarian is the one at UBC.  In order to qualify for this program one must already have a teaching degree and some form of two years teaching experience, since it is a graduate studies program.  Online options are an option in completing this course.  UBC offers a fifteen credit certificate of teacher-librarianship upon completing the course which can lead to job opportunities in being a teacher librarian.  I could not find the cost for the program or the length, it seems that it’s two semesters from what I saw but I’m not entirely sure.

Blog Post #9- Reflections on Comic Life

I did my comic life on an episode of the office which made it quite fun. I really enjoyed it because I got to create a comic based on one of my favourite shows.  I enjoyed creating the story but using the program was kind of irritating.  The program works but it is not without flaw, there aren’t many options and it can be difficult to maneuver. It isn’t very user friendly, I think it could be much easier if they changed or updated it. It was difficult to insert pictures, sometimes it wouldn’t be saved correctly for the program so it wouldn’t insert or wouldn’t paste. As well you couldn’t add boxes (comic boxes) on top of your picture, only before. Overall it is a good program, there is just a few kinks to be worked out.

If a teacher were to use this for a humanities 8 assignment, it could work for both English and socials subjects. An example of a project they could do is the following; create a comic for a chapter of a novel study they are working on.  They would have to have images and descriptions. The plot would have to be clear and background information would have to be given. The students should introduce the characters and the setting clearly. The comics would be marked on a quality, length, amount of images, quality of image, clear writing, and clear plot. I think doing this project for a portion or chapter of their novel study would give them a deep understanding of the story, since they would spend time turning it into a comic. This could work for a common grade eight novel study like the outsiders.

Blog Post #8-Book Shopping

1. The Shannara Chronicles: The Elfstones of Shannara (series) By Terry Brooks 
I think this would be a good book to get because it has just been made into a TV show, so people who are fans of the show would probably want to read the book. The story seems interesting and appropriate for our age group. 

2. The Summer Before the War: A Novel By Helen Simonson 
It’s a New York time bestseller, and a historical novel.  It could be helpful to read if you’re in a socials class or just interested the pre-war era.

3. Why not me? By Mindy Kaling
We Mindy Kaling’s first book so it would make sense to have her second book.  Many young girls find her to be an inspiration so she definitely appeals to our age group.

4. Half Lost by Sally Green
Half Lost by Sally Green is a teen fiction best seller.  Many teens would enjoy reading it.

5. Every day by David Levithan
The author of “Every Day” is a popular author, he co-wrote Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist which is a popular teen book we have at this library.

6. The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian
It’s a popular teen fiction book and a bestseller.

7. The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff
This novel deals with LGBT issues.  It won Winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction. It seems an important book for teens to be able to read.    

8. Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
This novel is set in the 1950’s Ireland and Brooklyn, NY. It’s a historical novel that was recently made into a film that won an academy award.

9. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts I and II by JK Rowling
There are so many Harry Potter fans that this much anticipated book would be a great addition to the library.

10. Be More Chill: A Novel by Ned Vizzini
We have another novel by this author that seems to be liked so it would make sense to have one of his other novels.

Blog Post 5- Looking at Other Libraries

8.  I like that there are many links and sub categories to visit for specific information.   They have lots of information on learning such as research methods, project planning guide, etc.  There is nothing I particularly dislike.
9. They have a North Surrey Secondary book club, a monthly concert in the library called Music 4 Lunch and a Media Production Studio.
10.  Their circulation doesn’t differ from ours.  They have policies and rules on digital citizenship, and internet safety.
11.  It seems to be a larger space from what I can see in the pictures.  Their website is more in an informative style with lots of links and information where as ours is in a blog format with lots of pictures and videos to get information across.

Blog Post 4B- Library Science Reflection

Library Science Reflection
In my first month of being a library science student I learned the interworking’s of a library. I have really enjoyed my first month as a library science student, I like being around books and having the opportunity of read and work on class work. I’ve gotten the chance to learn how books are organized in a library through the dewy decimal system assignment and the shelving assignment. I think in order to be a good library assistant you need to take initiative; help when you see opportunities.  As well it is important to check our shelving sections daily. 
My strengths include are knowing the material of the library; I read regularly so I know quite a few books in the library and I think I’m becoming more comfortable with where books are located.  As well I am organized so I’m usually on top of my assignments and keeping my shelves organized. 
My weaknesses are I struggled to acclimatize to new concepts, such as the Dewey decimal system, but now I think I am getting the hang out it.  Another weakness I have is that I can be distracted easily, since we get free time and it is self-directed it is easy to get distracted.  I feel that I am improving, and making good use of my time.
As I said previously I really enjoy the library atmosphere and having so many books at arm’s reach.  I really enjoy are newest assignment since it gives me as reason to read a book I bought a while ago, that is also in the library.  Some things that I found difficult were using the blog; I’m not super great with technology and I prefer to do things on paper so getting used to the blog was somewhat difficult.

One thing that could make library learning commons is if we do an inventory of books since often I can’t find books.  I see them appear on the computer as being here but they aren’t any where I could find in the library.  Another suggestion is to take suggestions for what new books should be bought for the library from the library science students.  A third suggestion would to bring back those nice reading chairs we used to have in the library rather than the bean bags.

Assignment 1- Book Quote

The following quote was written by the author of The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger.  This quote displays the impact a book can have on you, and how a truly great book can make you want to be friends with the author.  I discovered this quote while reading The Catcher in the Rye, one of Salinger's many novels.  It stood out to me right away as it captures how I've felt when reading a great book.
